Opals Down Under release the Horizon Opal Pendant
June 19th , 2008
Riding on the wave of success after selling the Charis Opal Pendant in May, Opals Down Under have now released the Horizon Opal Pendant, a glorious Queensland Boulder Opal carving in an 18k Handmade Yellow Gold setting.
The Queensland Boulder Opal used in this pendant has had sections of the opal carved away, using a Diamond Bur tool, to reveal the Natural Ironstone underneath, providing a unique and stunning appearance.
When looking at the pendant at certain angles, the separated sections of opal give an illusion of the ocean meeting the land, with the sky at the top with sparkling sections.
The Horizon Opal Pendant was cut and carved by Opals Down Under's experienced opal cutter Scott Coggan, and set by an Australian award-winning jeweller.
The setting features textured Yellow Gold, melding into smooth gold, to beautifully complement and not distract from the stunning patterns and colours in this Queensland Boulder Opal.
Opal Cutter, Scott Coggan said that he did not intend to create an illusion when carving the pattern into the stone, instead letting his imagination run wild without fully knowing the result.
"I let the stone create the image itself, by carving out the potch (colourless opal) that was streaking through the opal" he said.
"The carving was done using special Diamond Burs, similar to that used by dentists, which revealed the natural ironstone's colour, perfectly contrasting the bright blues and greens present in the opal."
"Once the carving was finished, I was impressed the result, until I turned the stone sideways and all of a sudden could clearly see the image of land meeting sea, with the sky in the background."
You can purchase this one-off piece of wearable art from Opals Down Under for AUD$7,025 inc GST, which includes an 18k Yellow Gold Omega Chain, or you can buy the Horizon Opal Pendant without the Omega Chain for AUD$5,480 inc GST.
